Diabetes Self-Management Support Group to Focus on Benefit of Regular Exercise

Physical activity can be a fun way to unwind and engage in activities that help you connect with family or friends. HealthPoint Fitness Clinical Integration Coordinator Laura Morningstar will discuss the benefits of exercise and its importance in managing diabetes.    

Morningstar, MSA, ATC, ACE-AFS, will speak to the Diabetes Self-Management Support Group on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. at HealthPoint – Cape. A tour of the fitness center will follow the program.

Midwest Official of Mended Hearts to Speak at Southeast Hospital

Wayne Lawson, Midwest assistant regional director of Mended Hearts, will speak at a meeting of the organization’s local chapter on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m. in Southeast Hospital’s Meeting Room 106.

SoutheastHEALTH “Strides for Scott” Walk/Run to Benefit ALS Association, Honor Dr. Scott Gibbs

“Strides for Scott,” a 5K walk/run to benefit the ALS Association and honoring neurosurgeon Scott Gibbs, MD – who is battling ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease – will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16. The race will start at 8:30 a.m. at the Jackson City Park, Pavilion 5.

Entry fee is $25 if paid by today or $30 on race day. Registration fee includes a race shirt. Additional donations are welcome. Attendance prizes will be awarded after the race.

Southeast Provides Support Group for Weight-Loss Surgery Patients

Have you undergone or are you considering bariatric weight-loss surgery? If so, SoutheastHEALTH’s Bariatric Support Group can help.

The group meets monthly. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 to 11 a.m. at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau. The sessions cover a variety of topics including medical management, meal planning and nutrition, behavior change and motivation, and exercise and fitness.

Healthy Cooking Class to Focus on ‘Splendid Soups’

Delicious and healthy soups can be easy to make. They can be stored for extended periods of time for a quick dinner later.

Join HealthPoint Nutritional Services Coordinator Raina Childers, MS, RD, LD, for the Healthy Cooking class on Monday, Nov. 18, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau. She will feature some great recipes to take the chill out of the air.

Southeast Hospice to Hold Memorial Service on Nov. 24

Southeast Hospice will hold its annual Community Memorial Service on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

The service is held to remember loved ones through music, prayers and eulogies. The service is open to the public. For more information, call 573-335-6208.

Southeast Journeys Cancer Support Group to Focus on the Benefits of Clinical Trials for Cancer Treatment

Southeast Journeys Cancer Support Group will focus on clinical trials for cancer patients at its meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Unity Room at the Southeast Cancer Center in Cape Girardeau.

Southeast Cancer Center Research Program Manager Scott Buescher, BSN, RN, will discuss the benefits of clinical trials for cancer treatment.

The support group covers educational topics from the American Cancer Society’s “I Can Cope” series, and offers care, support and encouragement for those battling cancer and their families and caregivers. For more information, call 573-519-4754.
