Turning Point Program for Breast Cancer Survivors Begins April 1

The 2014 spring session of Turning Point, a free program for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer within the past year, will be held on Tuesdays, starting April 1. The program will run through May 6.

The weekly class will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at HealthPoint Plaza in Cape Girardeau. The program is offered twice a year. The fall session is scheduled to run from Oct. 7 through Nov. 11.

Participants will receive six-month memberships to HealthPoint Fitness and personal fitness assessments with an appropriate exercise prescription. Turning Point classes will focus on healing for the mind, body and spirit. The free classes address everything from the benefits of exercise to nutrition and emotions surrounding breast cancer and healing.

SportsCare Provides Free Injury Screenings

Southeast SportsCare provides free injury screenings at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau. The screenings, performed by certified athletic trainers, are offered Monday mornings from 7 to 9 a.m. No appointment is necessary.

The screenings are open to everyone, regardless of age and athletic ability. The evaluations will be performed on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, contact Southeast SportsCare at 573-986-6635.

Easter Egg Hunt for Adults to Benefit Southeast Hospice

Easter eggs aren’t just for kids. SoutheastHEALTH Foundation and Southeast Hospice will hold their annual Easter Egg Hunt for Adults on Saturday, April 12, from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Bavarian Halle in Jackson.

Adults, 21 years of age and older, can hunt for thousands of plastic eggs – each of which will be a prize winner!  Participants should bring their own Easter baskets and flashlights. Tickets are $25 and include a Cook’s BBQ dinner, silent auction, oral auction and dance, with music by Diamond Sound Systems. A contest will be held for the most creative Easter basket.

Proceeds will benefit Southeast Hospice. Tickets are available at Southeast Hospice, 10 Doctors’ Park, or at Volunteer Services at Southeast Hospital. For more information, call 573-335-6208.

SoutheastHEALTH Provides Support Group for Weight-Loss Surgery Patients

Have you undergone or are you considering bariatric weight-loss surgery? If so, SoutheastHEALTH’s Bariatric Support Group can help.

The group meets monthly. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 19, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau. The free sessions cover a variety of topics including meal planning and nutrition, behavior change and motivation, and exercise and fitness.

Healthy Cooking Class to Serve Up Sauces

The Healthy Cooking class at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau will focus on getting “sauced” with healthy sauces on Monday, April 21, from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

Nothing enhances, enlivens and enriches a dish like a delicious sauce. These sauces are rich in nutrition and flavor with only a low-calorie investment, says registered dietitian and HealthPoint Nutritional Services Coordinator Raina Childers.

The cost is $3 for HealthPoint members and $5 for non-members. To register, call 573-986-4440.

Journeys Cancer Support Group to Focus on Fatigue, Oncology Rehab, Lymphedema

SoutheastHEALTH physical therapist Paula Stout will discuss fatigue, oncology rehab and lymphedema at the Journeys Cancer Support Group meeting on Tuesday, April 22, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Southeast Cancer Center in Cape Girardeau.

The support group will meet quarterly, with each session focusing on a different cancer topic. The group serves cancer patients and their caregivers. For more information, call 573-519-4725.

HealthPoint – Jackson Offers Free Self-Defense Class for Women

Girls and women can learn how to protect themselves at a free self-defense class at HealthPoint Fitness in Jackson.

The hour-long class at HealthPoint will be offered at 9 and 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26. The self-defense class is open to females, ages 12 and older.

Moo Sul Kwan Martial Arts instructor Doug Johnson, who has a black belt, will teach the self-defense sessions. Participants should dress comfortably for movement. To register, call HealthPoint at 573-755-2301.

HealthPoint – Jackson to Host Kids Extravaganza Health & Fitness Fair

Children will enjoy plenty of activities at the Kids Extravaganza Health & Fitness Fair on Saturday, April 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Southeast HealthPoint Fitness in Jackson.

The event is free for kids, ages 2 to 12. The fair will feature a wide range of activities, including face painting, a bounce house and hands-on nutrition as well as information on summer youth programs, diabetes and dental health.
