HealthPoint Fitness Offers Enrollment Special, Summer Camps

Join HealthPoint Fitness in June for only a $10 enrollment fee with a donation of any canned goods and begin your journey to better fitness. HealthPoint will distribute the canned goods to area food banks.

Membership includes access to both Cape and Jackson HealthPoint facilities. Now is the time to enroll your children in HealthPoint’s “Crazy Dayz of Summer” camps. SportsCare Holds Weekly Injury Screenings

SportsCare athletic trainers conduct free injury screenings on Mondays at HealthPoint – Cape from 7 to 9 am. No appointment is needed.

HealthPoint Offers Women’s Self-Defense Class

Don’t blink, don’t think, just do! Nick Slinkard, third degree black belt, will share self-defense techniques including awareness, prevention and preservation at the Women’s Self-Defense Class at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau. The 45-minute class will be held on Mondays from June 2 to July 7, starting at 7 p.m.

The cost is $50. Class is limited to 12 participants. Register at the HealthPoint front desk to reserve your spot.

Diabetes Self-Management Support Group to Focus on Over-the-Counter Medications

The Diabetes Self-Management Support Group will focus on “Over-the-Counter Medications” that are available in retail stores without a prescription at its meeting on Tuesday, June 10. It will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. at HealthPoint Plaza in Cape Girardeau.

Over-the-counter drugs are convenient and generally safe when used as directed. However, like all medications, they can cause unwanted or dangerous effects. Don Moore, PharmD, BCPS, clinical pharmacist at SoutheastHEALTH, will discuss these drugs and how to keep your family safe.

Free Seminar: Hip Replacement Surgery

Have hip pain? Anterior hip replacement surgery is a Simpler Solution. Learn more at this seminar on Tuesdays, June 10 and 17, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The first session will be held at HealthPoint – Cape; the second at the Dexter, Mo., Chamber of Commerce.

Orthopedic surgeon Hamid Redjal, MD, will discuss this procedure in which an incision is made in the front of the hip rather than in the back or side. This approach improves mobility and shortens recovery time, both in and out of the hospital.

Relay for Life Set for Saturday, June 14

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, June 14, from noon to midnight at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau. SoutheastHEALTH is the presenting sponsor of the event, which raises funds for the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer.

The Relay is open to the public and offers fun activities for all ages. For more information, contact the American Cancer Society at 573-334-9197.

Healthy Cooking Class to Showcase Nutritious Snacking

The kids are home for the summer and need some healthy options to munch on. Snacking can be a healthy part of eating well for everyone.

HealthPoint Nutritional Services Coordinator Raina Childers, MS, RD, LD, will showcase healthy snacks at the Healthy Cooking class on Monday, June 16. It will be held from 6 to 7:15 p.m. at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau.

The cost is $3 for HealthPoint members and $5 for non-members. Call 573-986-4440 to register.

SoutheastHEALTH Provides Support Group for Weight-Loss Surgery Patients

Have you undergone or are you considering bariatric weight-loss surgery? If so, SoutheastHEALTH’s Bariatric Support Group can help.

The group meets monthly. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau. The free sessions cover a variety of topics including meal planning and nutrition, behavior change and motivation, and exercise and fitness.
