This four hour class begins with a pregnancy overview including topics such as changing emotions, anatomy of pregnancy, discomforts, nutrition, warning signs of problems, hazards to avoid and special-attention pregnancies. We then venture on to learn about natural labor and birth, discussing the different stages of labor from early labor through delivery of the placenta. We will discuss and demonstrate comfort techniques such as relaxation and breathing, massage, use of focal points, hydrotherapy, different labor positions, the mechanisms and prevention of back labor, and providing support to the laboring mom. Other topics to be discussed are planning and decision making, labor induction, fetal heart monitoring, IV’s, options for pain relief, and possible interventions. Cesarean birth will be discussed including common causes, the surgery itself, and recovery. We will conclude our class by exploring newborn procedures, the normal newborn appearance, and what to expect in the Post-partum period including physical and emotional changes, and lifestyle adjustments.
