Bariatric Support Group

Bariatric Support Group

SoutheastHEALTH is offering a special support group for patients who have undergone or are considering bariatric weight-loss surgery.  Participants will have an opportunity to discuss issues, share successes and trade helpful hints in an overall supportive environment.

The group meets on the 3rd Saturday of every month and is facilitated by Raina Childers, MS, RD, LD, and Mary Etta Dunaway, RD, LD, CDE, registered dietitians with SoutheastHEALTH.

Breastfeeding and Infant Care - Saturday

This class will cover several aspects of infant care and safety that will be especially valuable to all first time parents, or as a review for those that have already had a baby.  Infant feeing will be discussed in length, addressing the  special concerns of both breastfeeding and formula feeding. This class will be taught by one the Lactation Consultants on staff at Southeast.

Breastfeeding Class - Online

This class will walk the learner through understanding how breastfeeding works, latching on and positioning, when to feed your baby, and how to know when they have had enough.  It will also explore breast care and breastfeeding lifestyle. Participants will receive "See What You Read: Better Breastfeeding", a comprehensive book which will allow you to see real life examples of the subject you are reading about.  This course can be completed in the privacy of your own home and in your own time.

Childbirth Online Class

This online childbirth class is designed for busy parents-to-be, delivering with SoutheastHEALTH, who prefer not to attend a formal class.  Participants will receive "See What You Read: Childbirth," a comprehensive, interactive book which will allow you to "see what you read" at a special accompanying website.  This free, easy-to-use website includes more than 50 video clips that show real-life examples of the subjects you're reading about.  You can watch breathing and relaxation techniques, helpful labor positions, stages of labor, four complete birth stories, and much more in the privacy of your own home.

Childbirth Preparation Class - Saturday

Childbirth Preparation Class

This class addresses the emotional and physical changes of pregnancy, the normal labor process, common instances requiring intervention, vaginal and cesarean delivery, coping techniques for natural labor, and pain control options.  We will also discuss the physical changes that follow delivery, as well as normal newborn adjustment. This class will be taught by one of the OB nurses on staff at Southeast.

Diabetes Self-Management Support Group

Southeast Diabetes Center hosts this free support group facilitated by Southeast’s Diabetes Educators. The programs are geared toward people who are living with diabetes and trying to control blood glucose. Friends and family members are also welcome.

Taking Care of Your Heart

Debbie Leoni, MSA, RN, director of Cardiac Outreach, will present information about specialty
services offered by the Southeast Heart Center and discuss symptoms that can require
emergency response. This presentation will also review steps that you can take to reduce your
risk of heart disease.

March 12
The Eyes Have It

There are steps you can take to avoid eye problems. This program will provide you with five
specific steps you can take to make a difference in your eye health. Donna Pry, OD, from
Southeast Cozean Eye clinic will discuss the importance of routine eye exams for people living
with diabetes as well other eye conditions that need management.

April 9
A1C Champion – Taking Control of Diabetes

What does it really mean to be in control of your diabetes? Why is it worth the effort? This
program helps people take control of their diabetes by answering these questions and many
more. The topics covered are relevant for those newly diagnosed as well as those who have had
diabetes for an extended period of time and would like to learn how to better control their blood
sugar levels. The program will be presented by a person who is living with diabetes and is an
A1C Champion.

May 8 (Wednesday)
Product Fair – Osage Centre 10:00 AM – noon

Take this chance to visit vendor booths and see the products that can be used to help manage
diabetes. New items will be displayed and there will be time to ask questions from company
representatives.

June 11
Healthy Cooking Demonstration

Raina Childers, MS, RD, LD, a registered dietitian at Southeast Hospital and Nutritional Services
coordinator at HealthPoint Fitness, will provide a cooking demonstration. Healthy food choices
will be highlighted and recipes will be provided.

Girls will spend a week discovering if healthcare is in their future!

If you’re a high school student considering a career in healthcare, you won’t want to miss this unique opportunity hosted by SoutheastHEALTH in partnership with the SoutheastHEALTH College of Nursing & Health Sciences, SoutheastHEALTH Foundation and the Missouri Foundation for Health. HealthCare Camp is designed to address the region’s growing need for nurses and the many career opportunities this vital profession offers.

The Camp program combines the excitement of being a part of the Southeast healthcare team with group instruction, ethics discussions, fitness and wellness activities and fun social events.

Dates: June 2-5, 2013 (Sunday evening through Wednesday dinner)

Location: College of Nursing and Health Sciences, SoutheastHEALTH and various clinical sites

Tuition: $275. Includes all meals, instructional materials, specially-designed t-shirts and transportation to all hospital clinicals and recreation events. Three nights lodging in a Southeast Missouri State University dormitory is included at no additional cost. Tuition due upon acceptance.

Grief Support Group

Grief Support Group

These groups offer a safe place where adults come together to share their grief following the death of a loved one.  Trained facilitators offer educational programs and an opportunity to share and heal. Lifesaver Class for New Parents

This class helps participants recognize, prevent and respond to life-threatening situations.  The class covers infant CPR and response to a choking infant.  This class is free to those delivering at Southeast - a $10 fee for others.

Mended Hearts

SEMO Mended Hearts Chapter 183
"It's Great to be Alive” ... and to help others

What is Mended Hearts?

Mended Hearts is a national, non-profit service organization designed to provide continuing education and emotional support for heart patients and their families. It is a patient-centered and patient-operated organization. Southeast Heart Center and local physicians are involved only in an advisory capacity or as resources.

Mended Hearts offers informative programs and activities for its members and provides a quarterly magazine that is made possible by national/local dues of $29.50 per family or $20 per person. The SEMO Mended Hearts Chapter usually meets the second Tuesday of each month at Southeast Hospital.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

This program focuses on basic resuscitation skills for newly born infants.

Students study independently, complete an online examination, and then attend an in-person skills session.

This program is intended for healthcare providers who perform resuscitation in the delivery room or newborn nursery.

Ostomy Club

United Ostomy Association
This group meets the second Wednesday of each month at Southeast Hospital. A volunteer organization, UOA’s goal is to reduce the practical and emotional burdens of those who have undergone ostomy surgery so they may function as fully as possible socially and physically. There are NO meetings in January and February.




Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider

A 2 day training program. The goal of the course is to aid the pediatric healthcare provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting  in improved outcomes. Professional healthcare providers use PALS during the stabilization and transportation phases of pediatric emergency, in or out of hospital.

This class is designed to help the other children in the family prepare, in a positive way, for the addition of a new family member. This class is geared toward children ages 3 to 9.

Ryan A. LeGrand, MDRyan A. LeGrand, MD, General/Bariatric Surgery, has joined the Medical Staff at Southeast Hospital. Dr. LeGrand holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Southeast Missouri State University. He received his MD degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia, Missouri. Dr. LeGrand completed a General Surgery residency at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. He also completed a fellowship in Bariatric/Minimally Invasive Surgery at the SSM Weight-Loss Institute at DePaul Health Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. LeGrand is certified in the Specialty of Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Participants receive a six-month membership to HealthPoint Fitness and a Personal Fitness Assessment with an appropriate exercise prescription.

Winter Swim Lessons

Tuesdays and Thursdays
January 29 - February 26
HealthPoint Cape

Swim lessons for preschoolers, ages 3 to 5, will be held from 5:30 to 6:10 p.m. Classes for beginner swimmers, children 6 years of age and older, will be held from 6:20 to 7 p.m. The cost is $60 for members and $70 for nonmembers.
