The Joint Commission continuously improves healthcare for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating healthcare organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.
Frequently Asked Questions About The Joint Commission
An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare. The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 20,500 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States.
Joint Commission surveyors visit accredited healthcare organizations a minimum of once every 39 months (two years for laboratories) to evaluate standards compliance. This visit is called a survey.
Joint Commission surveyors are highly trained experts who are:
