Accelerated Childbirth Preparation

  • All-inclusive, one-day class is for couple who want basic information and cannot attend five weekly evening classes.
  • Topics include
    • Emotional and physical changes of pregnancy
    • Labor process
    • Coping techniques for labor pain
    • Medical options for pain control
    • Cesarean delivery
    • Physical, emotional changes following delivery
    • Normal newborn adjustment
    • Breast feeding
  • Experienced OB nurse teaches the class
  • Your partner or support person should attend class with you.

Class is offered one Saturday per month, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch on your own.

  • Fee: Free for those delivering at Southeast. Others are charged $40 per couple. Fee is collected on class day.

Lamaze Childbirth Preparation

Lamaze Childbirth Preparation

Class is taught by a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator and prepares parents who are planning natural childbirth.

  • Instruction emphasizes the six healthy birth practices of Lamaze.
  • Five weekly sessions cover Lamaze theory and
    • Emotional, physical changes of pregnancy
    • Labor process as it occurs naturally
    • Coping techniques for labor pain
    • Medical options for pain control
    • Cesarean delivery
    • Physical, emotional changes following delivery
    • Normal newborn adjustment
    • Breastfeeding
  • Class includes practice of coping techniques, testimonial from a couple who experienced birth naturally.
  • Your partner or support person should attend class with you.

Class meets Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

  • You should start class in the early part of your last trimester.
  • Class size limited to 8 couples

Fee: Free to those delivering at Southeast Hospital. Others are charged $200 per couple, payable at the first class.

Sibling Class

Sibling Class

The Sibling Class helps prepare brothers and sisters to welcome a new baby brother or sister.

  • For children ages 3 to 9
  • Class focuses on helping siblings prepare for a change in the family
    • What to expect when baby comes home
    • What siblings can do to help mom
    • Encourages siblings to share feelings with mom and dad
    • Assure siblings they will always have their special place in the family
  • A short video teaches how to safely handle the new baby using life-size dolls.
  • Children tour the OB unit and enjoy a snack before going home.

Sibling Class is offered the second Monday of every month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Southeast Hospital. Parents may observe class if they wish

Lifesaver Class for New Parents

Lifesaver Class for New Parents

This class helps parents recognize, prevent and respond to life-threatening situations.

  • Infant CPR
  • Response to a choking infant
  • Steps to reduce risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)

Class meets one a month from 6 to 7:15 p.m. at Southeast Hospital.

  • Class dates vary from month to month
  • Class size limited to 9 couples

Fee: None to those delivering at Southeast; $10 fee for others

Breastfeeding Class – Online

Learn everything you need to know about breastfeeding, at your own pace, and in the comfort of your home. This program explains

  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • How your body makes milk
  • Latching, positioning

  • Feeding patterns
  • Routine breast care
  • Returning to work, expressing, storing milk

Class participants also receive the book, “Better Breastfeeding.”

  • When you sign up for the book, you do not need to sign up for Childbirth Preparation classes.

Epidural Class – Online (English)

Epidural Class – Online (English)

This class educates you on anesthesia choices, including using an epidural for labor. Anesthesia options for Cesarean delivery are also included.

Two-Part Class

  • To complete the first part of the class, view the Epidural Video.
  • For the second part of the class, complete the Health History Form and submit it.
    • Health history information will be sent to the OB Nurse Navigator who will keep it on file on the OB unit.
    • You will receive an email confirmation that the form has been received.
    • When you come in for labor, the Anesthetist will review the information and you will sign the page indicated informed consent.
